It’s The Revolution’s 6 Monthiversary!

Half a year gone by already? Holy carp!

Our three does and one buck have created:

  • 5 litters
  • 34 kits
  • 30 fryers

Together, they have eaten:

  • 360 lbs of hay
  • 1000 lbs of feed (approx)

Wow! We’re gonna make it. I swear.

    Hi!

I’m considering raising rabbits for food, and I was wondering about the cost effectiveness of raising your own rabbits. Obviously this is not the only issue, and I would be doing it mainly to be able to raise my own, humanely slaughtered meat, but do have any idea of what the expense of feeding and caring for the rabbits factors out to per rabbit?

    Best,
    Julia

    Hi Julia-

I don’t have any firm numbers on what exactly it’s costing us in feed per rabbit. We just haven’t gotten that scientific about it. But I can roughly guess.

A good feed to meat ratio is 4:1. So, for every 4 lbs of feed, you get 1 lb of rabbit. Since we’re paying $12.50 for 50 lbs of feed, our rabbit costs us $1/lb.

BUT! That’s not including the feed for our breeding stock. It’s also assuming a 4:1 feed to meat ratio, which we may or may not be achieving. Weather factors in. If it’s too hot, rabbits can’t breed. If it’s too cold, they eat more.

Last spring, with 3 working does (pregnant or nursing), 2 bucks, and assorted growing fryers, we were buying 200 lbs of feed every month, or $50.

That’s as good as I can do right now. I’ll have to think about it some more and do some more calculating.

    Thanks!
