Organic Feed – coming soon?

We’ve recently started buying our pelleted feed at Hillsboro Feed Co, who mill their own feed. So it’s local. And it’s only $12.50 for a 50 lb bag of 16%. That’s a whole $2.50 less than the Albers you can get at Concentrates, Inc! Granted, we have to drive all the way out to Hillsboro, but Joy does that anyway.

They don’t mill organic rabbit feed. But then, neither does anyone else in the quantities we want at prices we can afford.

However. Yes, there is a however. When Joy went in to buy some pellets, she was told that they could mill an organic rabbit feed for us. They could mill a whole ton of it!

However. Yes, there is a however. They will only mill a whole ton of it. We did some fancy calculatin’ and figured it would take us (with our 3 does, 2 bucks, and various babies) 10 months to go through that much feed. (Who did the math? That’s 200 lbs of feed/month.) Pellets go stale after a couple of months. Boo.

So we need some help. Anyone? Buehler? Split an order of organic feed with us?

If we can get enough people interested, we’ll go ahead and contact them re: pricing. Please comment if you want to feed your buns organic!

  • Kelsy,
I may be interested in the Organic food!
    Hillsboro, Kansas?

  • michaeline

Great site – thank you! We are just jumping in to bunny raising…I am interested in the organic feed.
Have you pastured your bunnies? I’m not sure if I want to plant a “lawn” just to do it.

Would you consider offering your bucks for stud service?

    Thanks again,
    Michaeline

Hello! I just came across your site while I was researching making my own organic feed. Coincidentally, I have my own little bunny farm that I began not too long after your own. I was not aware that i was already part of a revolution! If you were not on the other side of the continent, I reside in New York, I would totally buy in to split the cost of the feed. By the spring, when I expect to be in full 1st gen. production, thus will be going through a ton of feed every 4 months. You have certainly motivated me to look for a local supplier though that can deliver. Keep it up!

  • Kathryn

I too would be interested in splitting an organic order (but I too reside in the Eastern part of the US). I’ve been on here searching for high quality feed and so far have not found my ideal. Michelle, did you happen to find anything closer East?

I’d also like to ask all you care-conscious bunny people whether there is a trick to getting bunnies neutered/spayed. So many web sites promote it (for obvious reasons) like it’s a simple affordable thing, but around here it costs $300 per rabbit. How are so many farms able to afford this?

    Thanks much,
    Kathryn

I’m interested in chatting with you about getting organic feed in Portland. Please send me an email – I couldn’t find a way to contact you directly.

I am 90 miles east of Portland and would like to find reasonable organic rabbit feed. We raise meat and 4h rabbits and feel it doesn’t do much good to raise your own meat if it’s not fed organic.
      thank you

  • Jacqui

We are interested in organic feed. I would like to request no soy though!!!
Please contact us if this is still in the works. We are in WA. but SL lives in Aloha and could pick up for us.
    Thanks. Jacqui

  • Me too! I’d like to learn more also if this is still in the works. I am on the Seattle area but could pick up if it works out.

  • Oh and forgot to mention, if anyone is also in the Seattle area I am working with a mill that is just getting started with rabbit feed and need to find more interested
farmers for her to supply. It’s a chicken and egg
sort of thing. Check out: scratchandpeck.com.

I am just getting my setup going and should have rabbits and needing feed in the spring. I am in Olympia, but regularly go down to Portland. I don’t get up to Seattle as much, though there is always the possibility. I would love to go in on organic. Otherwise I was looking into making my own. Anyone know some good recipes?

I ran across your web site. My wife and I grow organic crops in Sidney NE. In 2009 we started making and selling organic soy free poultry feed. I have had several customers who have asked for organic rabbit pellets but have been reluctant to buy a pellet mill. My question is there really that much demand for them? Give me a call and let me know. If I can get enough people together, I would start making rabbit pellets.

Where are you guys at? I’m looking into raising rabbits organically. I would love to know more about the organic feed – but I’m in Mississippi. Are you anywhere near me? I’m going to look around the web page a bit more- I like your blog. I’m sure that location information is on here somewhere. I’m just looking to get started. I wanted to know though – they say in general that raisers use antibiotics and wormers in the rabbit feed. I’d prefer to raise the meat completely organic. Can I use something like colloidal silver in place of the antibiotics? Olive Leaf Extract, Wild Oregano, Grapefruit Seed Extract, and Diatomacious Earth also come to mind as possible solutions to parasites and illness. Do these things work with rabbits? How do I know what herbs are good or bad for rabbits? Is cinnamon alright? I know that every species has different limits to what’s edible or advisable. I know enough about herbs in general to keep them organically – I just don’t know enough about rabbits individually. Is there a book that will tell me? or do any of you know? Thanks for the great web page – I plan on looking around a lot more.

    • Kelsy

      Hi Jen-

We’ve never had to feed antibiotics or wormers to our rabbits. I think the best way to promote health is to reduce stress. Good food, good air, good water, and enough room make for healthy rabbits!

As for what kind of herbs they will tolerate, there is a Yahoo! Group called Herbal Rabbit that seems to be pretty active. I would think anything they run across in the wild would be fine. I know that fenugreek and anise are fine to promote lactation in new mamas.

      Good luck!

I looked at their website and did not see the organic rabbit pellets. However, I followed the link for closest mill which for us is Hermiston. I have sent an email to find out if they are or will make a reasonbly priced organic pellet. If anyone else is interested let me know to pass on the fact there are several of us out there.
      Tanks.

    • Tracy

Hey I contacted Payback nutrition, the pellets come from another “plant” but my local feed store in the columbia gorge The Feed Shack in the Dalles; ordered them for me. They are more pricey 14.95 for 25# but most organic is and we don’t have a mill around that can do it. Just a current heads up for anyone.Happy tails.

  • sheryl in Missouri

howdy to all fellow organic followers. I would like to start an organic rabbitry in Mtn. Grove Missouri (south central) but would like to find someone who sells organic pellets without soy, or wheat. You can contact me at 417-926-1001 and leave me a message as I am out a lot. I would consider splitting a ton with someone once I have the rabbits. I have 4 double cages and a single and am looking for the right kind of meat rabbit. If there is a dual purpose for meat and fur, I would be interested in that breed as well. I hope this thread is still going as the last post was July of 2011.

    Thanks everyone!

I’m in upstate NY and I’m searching for organic pellets – how many of us are there in this area?
    Could we start a co-op??

    kaseeberger@gmail.com

  • Kim

Modesto Milling in Ca sells organic feed, just gave them a call -

They charge $50 to ship 50 lbs BUT -

they can drop ship a pallet of 10 50 lb bags to Glenmont NY
    (truck depot) for $173 shipping.

That’s currently $39.47 total for 50 lbs of organic rabbit pellets including shipping.

I live about an hour from Glenmont and will be moving to nearer Utica in 2012. Anyone in the area who’d be interested in splitting shipments??

Or has anyone found any better prices out there??
