Modesto Milling in Ca sells organic feed, just gave them a call -

They charge $50 to ship 50 lbs BUT -

they can drop ship a pallet of 10 50 lb bags to Glenmont NY
(truck depot) for $173 shipping.

That's currently $39.47 total for 50 lbs of organic rabbit pellets including shipping.

I live about an hour from Glenmont and will be moving to nearer Utica in 2012. Anyone in the area who'd be interested in splitting shipments??

Or has anyone found any better prices out there??

So glad to find this site! I am embarking on raising rabbits for meat at college which gives the whole thing an additional layer of complexity... Very mixed reactions to my plans, but my thinking is either I will raise my own meat (and kill, process, etc.) or become a vegetarian. So we'll see.

Wanted to chime in on housing -- I am personally new to meat rabbits, but I raised show rabbits a few years back and still have one of my babies and a stray as pets, and the biggest concerns for me has always been predators and foot damage--the breed I raised (Mini Rex) tend to have thin furring on their feet so that's an additional factor but the biggest worry (even in my suburban area!) was foxes/raccoons/hawks/coyotes.

howdy to all fellow organic followers. I would like to start an organic rabbitry in Mtn. Grove Missouri (south central) but would like to find someone who sells organic pellets without soy, or wheat. You can contact me at 417-926-1001 and leave me a message as I am out a lot. I would consider splitting a ton with someone once I have the rabbits. I have 4 double cages and a single and am looking for the right kind of meat rabbit. If there is a dual purpose for meat and fur, I would be interested in that breed as well. I hope this thread is still going as the last post was July of 2011.

Thanks everyone!

I have been trying to talk my husband into having rabbits for food. We too would like to become more self sufficient. We are on a 1/3 acre parcel and have 7 very loved chickens for the eggs, and we are talking about letting them have chicks this spring for the meat.

Reading your blogs and comments really made me feel good about my decision, then I saw the video. I can't do blood. Hubby says that we would put the broomstick over the rabbit neck, stretch, cut the neck, and I would fall over backwards and be out cold. He's probably right.

Is this something that can be overcome? I'm very angry with myself that I am such a wimp. Women did this kind of thing for centuries! Plus I have a tendency to get to attached to the animals. What do you recommend? Stick to planning a veggie garden?? =)

Thanks for your site. It truly is wonderful.

Hi, you two. Just reading through your site, and I've gotta tell you that I was thoroughly amused. I am a vegetarian who has raised rabbits in the past to sell to the meat industry (before I became a vegetarian), and who plans to raise rabbits in the future for my own dog food (and STILL be a vegetarian). I just seriously have to laugh at some of the ridiculous comments though! I love how smoothly you handle the stupidity. Two thumbs up!

Do you keep your cows, goats, and chickens in your house John? Rabbits are livestock, all my meat has wonderful personalities also. Everyone thinks because they are cute and furry you shouldn't eat them. Everyone of my future diners are well taken care of. Rabbits do alot better in cold then heat so having maples don't mean anything. Ann I'm sorry about your rabbits, get 2 more does a buck and a good lock on your gate. Maybe a good outdoor guard dog to attack the stupid people that thinks it's wrong to raise our own meat. My chicken I ate for dinner had free range with plenty of water bugs and movement not locked in some tiny cage with it's beak cut off. It was mighty tasty!!
